News Feed Forums Does anyone know? Bikepacking in Jotunheimen or other areas

My girlfriend and I are going to Norway this summer. Right now, the plan is to park the car somewhere and go cycling for 2–3 days from there.

Is there a round trip route or option in Jotunheimen to cover about 200 km over 3 days?

Do you have any other tips for similar cycling routes in southern Norway or on the same height as Jotunheimen? We are flexible because of the car…

There are many options to put together a 200km route around Jotunheimen.

Here is one lovely route to start with: https://cyclenorway.com/en/routes/bygdin-loop/

You can also add the world-famous Tusenmeteren to that route: https://cyclenorway.com/en/routes/tusenmeteren/

If you want help putting together the best 200km loop to meet your needs. Just book a call with me, and I’ll go through the options and put it together for you: https://calendly.com/app/scheduling/meeting_types/user/me

Hi Niels. Are to credit card bikepacking (staying at mountain lodges etc) or bringing your tent?

The Bygdin loop is really nice!

I started out with a short answer but got carried away 😊

Jotunheimen is a very scenic area. It is also very hilly. The Jotunheimen Rundt bike race (Jotunheimen round trip) is a long round trip from A (Lærdal) to B (Sogndal). One version of a round trip is to start at Tyinkrysset (accommodation possible), follow the bike race route but make a short cut from Turtagrø hotel to Øvre Årdal along the Tindevegen and then go via the 1000 meter switchbacks (amazing!!) back to Tyinkrysset. It is hilly, it is hard, but you will have some awesome views along the way 😊 https://ridewithgps.com/routes/94436

Alternative 1 – lots of gravel, short version. Start in Ål, round trip.

    – Day 1 – ride from Ål via Fanitull road to Hemsedal (mixed, mostly gravel). 45km. 820hm.

    – Day 2 – ride from Hemsedal on the Peer Gynt road to Gomobu fjellstue (mountain lodge). 42km, 200hm.

    – Day 3 – ride from Gomobu on the Mjølkevegen road to Gol and continue back to Ål. 80km, 6-700hm.

Alternative 2 – also lots of gravel. An extended version of the Bygdin loop. Start somewhere near Vaset in Valdres (Gomobu fjellstue).

    – Day 1 – ride to Eidsbugarden, stay at the DNT hut. A mix of gravel and paved roads. https://www.dnt.no/hytter/betjente/fondsbu/

    – Day 2 – start with a boat trip across Bygdin lake https://jvb.no/mb-bitihorn/, then follow the Jotunheimen road (gravel) to Ruten Fjellstue (very cosy mountain lodge). https://www.ruten.no/

    – Day 3 – go back to Vaset/Gomobo via Vestre Gausdal and Fagernes (mixed paved road and gravel). This is a long day, 150+km. It is possible to split this into two stages and stay at either Spåtind Fjellhotell or Valdres Høyfjellshotell.

Alternative 3 – also lots of gravel. Almost as #2 but without the boat trip. Start somewhere near Vaset in Valdres (Gomobu fjellstue).

    – Day 1 – ride on gravel via Syndingstøga, continue down to Ryfoss, climb across Slettefjellet and to Beitostølen (lots of hotels). 70km and 1400hm. Or continue to Bygdin hotel, 81km, 1800hm.

    – Day 2 – from Beitostølen to Jotunheimenvegen (gravel road) and to Ruten Fjellstue (mountain lodge). 71km, 900hm.

    – Day 3 – from Ruten to Spåtind høyfjellshotell, 80km, 930hm. Mixed roads.

    – Day 4 – from Spåtind hotell via Steinsetfjorden (lake) and Leira back

    Good luck!

And make a call with Matthew!
