• Norway Day 12

The alarm was set for 7.30 as we wanted to ride some extra km. We were wild camping, so the end point was only an estimation. Most of the day, we would be following the scenic route 13 on the edge of the Fjords.

Today was a first. We were going to cycle past a bakery for the first time, so much choice, but we settled for a cinnamon twist and a custard pastry.

It was only a km after this we stopped at a small harbour in the village of Ardel. Where we chose the custard pastry to eat with our drink. Our first hour had been some of the best riding so far in Norway. With no time limit, we watched fish jumping, Oyster Catchers grazing, and a large wrasse nibbling at seaweed.

The riding continued so much to see and take in, we found a stamp for the postcard that has been travelling with us for a week and filled our bags with food as the shops would be closed for 2 days.

We found another harbour for lunch, where children played in their powerboat. An outside plug gave us a free topup for our phones. We enjoyed our hour there watching the world go by while eating fish soup and crackers and honey for dessert.

Steady climbing for the remainder of the day passing through 9 tunnels, the longest being 700m. Stopping a few times. Once so, Jenni could explore a steep path to the waters edge. Before reaching our wild camp spot 2 meters from the Fjord edge.

More exploring the Fjords tomorrow as we head towards Voss, where I was stationed with the Army in the 1980s.

      • The British Army was in Voss in the 1980s? That sounds like a nice place to get stationed! What did you do there and for how long?

        • @Matthew Norway I was an article warfare instructor, we used the old army base at Voss to store and repair equipment. We the rented a large chatel to house and train troops before heading north for field exercises. Was here for 6 months a year.
