This is a bit off-topic but I am very enthused about a Netflix movie I just watched about a young man from Rjukan who grew to be a leader in the Norwegian resistance against the Nazi occupation:
Nr. 24
Young apprentice Gunnar Sønsteby from Rjukan decides to resist Nazi-Germany on the day of the invasion to later become the leader of the “Oslo-gang” carrying out countless daring acts of sabotage making him Norway’s greatest war hero.

@Matthew Norway I appreciate all of the history that you throw in to you vlogs. I don’t recall seeing any mention of Sønsteby but I do recall the story of the sabotage of the heavy-water plant.
I am booked now to return to Norway in mid-August. My itinerary is set so now i need to link up with any historical points of interest that might be along my route ….. including a couple of Stave Churches.

@mpage There are a few statues of Sønsteby in Oslo, which are very nice. I’ve never had a route that ties with his history, but certainly a great hero of WW2 and the resistance museum in Oslo is well worth a visit!

@Matthew Norway There is even a statue of him in Rjukan – with his bike, of course 🙂
The story of the sabotage of the heavy water plant is also featured in the well made NRK tv series “The Heavy Water War: Stopping Hitler’s Atomic Bomb”.
It’s very beautiful to cycle in this area east to west. First along Tinnsjø lake (where the saboteurs sank a ferry that carried heavy water – and some people), through the narrow valley with historic industry along the river, climb at Vemork with a great view of the valley and the mighty Rjukanfossen.

@mpage Excellent movie. If you haven’t visited the Resistance Museum in Oslo, I highly recommend you do so. Located in Akershus Fortress.

@GBAumanVMD My single visit to Oslo so far was a whirlwind of frantic sightseeing so, unfortunately, I was not able to experience much more than the Vigeland Sculpture Garden, a stroll through Akershus Fortress, and the Nobel Peace Center (was gratified to see Al Gore’s portrait in there because I helped that effort in a very small way but I helped 🙂. I will return and check out the museum for sure …. and City Hall …. and … and
