Hi, me and some friends are going on a bikepacking trip 29.04- 01.05. We where hoping to do an extended version of jotunheimen rundt on gravel by adding Grimsdalen. I really want to show my friemds this part, which I hve already done once myself 🙂
But apparently Grimsdalen opens up june 5. Does anyone know if you are allowed to cycle on the road before june 5? Or if its fully closed for all.

Although there’s been less snow in the mountains this year and many roads are opening earlier than usual, I think you’re being optimistic planning to ride Jotunheimen Rundt on gravel in late May. Some of those roads—especially Tusenmeteren—are likely still unrideable. Please let us know what you find. As for Grimsdalen, it’s not officially closed, so you can ride it, but expect the road to be wet, damp and damaged in places, making it harder to ride.

Thank you so much for your feedback :)We where thinking it was risiky, so will look for options I think, as we dont have that much time to ride soggy roads.

@alicegrindheim Note, the way the weather is right now, with many blue sky days, Grimsdalen may be dry and rideable. But only going there will answer that question. I think you will have many options in late May, but some areas of Jotunheim will be off limits.

@Matthew Norway do you think the capital to mountains gravel loops is a good choice for end on the may? https://cyclenorway.com/en/routes/capital-to-mountains-gravel-loop/

It’s hard to say for sure. I was at 800m on gravel yesterday in Telemark, and there were only patches of snow left and easy to get around. Usually in mid May snow still covers 800m, so it’s a strong possibility it may be good to ride. The high part over Fanitullvegen (1000m) would be my biggest concern, which will be very similar to Grimsdalen. I think you might be good to do it, but only riding will give you the full answer.

@Matthew Norway Thank you 🙂 We found someone who posted this yesterday. Seems Fanitullvegen is good:)

@alicegrindheim Then I’d say it’s all good!
