I’ve been using Komoot for about 3 years and most recently on a trip along the Baltic. I like some of its features but get frustrated with some of its quirks (like designing a route and having to place multiple “destination” points to prevent the software from re-routing me in a direction I did not want). I’m exploring other options, including RidewithGPS and Bikemap. Since I’m planning a trip to Norway next year, I’m curious to know if other folks have used Komoot for gravel rides in Norway and if it proved reliable. (It routed me to a flight of stairs in Poland that could have been avoided using a nearby dirt road.)

    Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I’ve used Komoot quite a bit in the past. It usually is quite good, but as you mention it can have some quirks. My go-to at the moment is Strava, mostly for the heatmaps!

I use Komoot and Strava for route making. A lot (if not all) of Cycle Norway’s routes are on RidewithGPS. I have no experience with RwGPS, but I guess it is used for a reason! @Matthew Norway :)?

Komoot is more user-friendly but does leave you ‘Komooted’ a times, taking you on non-cycling routes or trying to push you onto a terrible farm road for 500m when the main road is just fine. There’s also no quality control, so anyone can upload sections that may not be advisable. RidewithGPS, while less intuitive, offers more accurate route planning and includes essential POIs that help riders anticipate challenges. From a tourism and website standpoint, RWGPS is the better choice for my needs.

Have been using RideWithGPS since it was first developed. Very reliable everywhere I’ve ridden (Norway, Switzerland, UK, Netherlands…) I am based in US! Hope this helps.

I use cycle.travel for planning, very user friendly. But use komoot for navigation via downloaded gpx file. The 2 together make excellent routes.
