    Hi all,

My wife and I are flying into Paris from New Zealand at the start of August with our bikes to cycle for around 35 days in Norway. We’re trying to sort an itinerary and would love some input.

Our initial thoughts were to fly to Tromsø from Paris and bike south along the Eurovelo 1 to Bødo then continue along the coast route to Trondheim. We note that all the cycle route notes are south to north and wondering are we going in the right direction? (Is the prevaling wind against us??).

Other thoughts are to include some of the following trips – Mjølkeregen, Rallarvegen, Aursjovegen Loop and the Tour de Dovre. What are your recommendations? would you leave only of these out or should we add any others?

We are both in our early to mid 60s but are regular bikers and have done a reasonable amount of light weight bike packing through New Zealand and a little through Switzerland, France and Sardinia.

Love an adventure and happy with around 80-100km per day. Riding mountain bikes non powered.

    Cheers

    David

Hi David, It sounds like you’ve planned an incredible trip.

Yes, the prevailing wind is from the southeast—which means heading north will in general give you more tailwind. That said, many cyclists choose to ride south, especially as summer in the north starts winding down. Flexibility is key in Norway, and it looks like you’re already considering the right factors.

The mountain gravel roads you mentioned are all above 1000 meters, so conditions can be unpredictable, particularly within your time frame. They’re fantastic routes, and there are plenty more equally rewarding options. The challenge is balancing ambition with the realities of Norway’s terrain and weather.

Are you planning to use the train to access certain sections, or are you looking to link everything into one continuous ride? If you’d like to go over potential route options in more detail—factoring in specific areas, and climates, and ensuring adaptability you are more than welcome to book a call with me. https://calendly.com/cyclenorway

Hi it sounds a wonderful adventure, we arrive in Norway late May and will be doing a southern loop. The thing we do differently is avoid popular cycle routes and tourist attractions, finding there is just as much to see on these less travel routes.

As Matthew says best to head north due to prevailing wind, the wind can be fierce up north. Out of interest what is your setup? As you are the same age as us do you go for comfort like us or speed?

Here is our loop I created to estimate distances and time.

That looks like an excellent loop. We’re flying into Oslo and want to do a three or four day preferably with lodging and rent a car or take a train to get there. We are expert cycliy and I’ve done some bike packing, but would prefer not to do the whole tent thing. If you have any ideas for a shorter loop, I would love the input.
