Getting your bike on a bus to avoid a tunnel
Posted by Mike Page on March 13, 2025 at 3:42 pmWhat’s been the general experience of hitching a ride on a bus with a packed bike?
Somewhere between never and always?
I know that it is up to the driver but if you are waiting (hopefully) at a bus stop near a tunnel entrance what are the odds?

Based on my experience, over 90% of bus drivers will pick you up and take you through the tunnel. Some may even let you ride for free if you’re only passing through. I’ve had bus drivers approach me on ferries to inform me about upcoming tunnels and offer me a lift. However, once in a while, you might encounter a driver having a bad day or a bus that’s already full, and they may refuse. In eight years, that’s only happened to me once.

Thanks, Matthew.
That’s the kind of road magic I am counting on.

Hi,
I’ve got a similar question: I tried to buy a bus ticket for the tunnel from Gudvangen to Flam in advance. That seems to be easy, but I wasn’t able to add a ticket for the bicycle. What can I do?
I know, there is a railway connection from Upsete to Myrdal, but that’s not my preferred direction…

Aaaah, got an answer from Vy. Not very helpful:
Hi, We appreciate your reaching out to Vy Buss.
Unfortunatly, bicycles are not allowed on that bus line.
I apologize for the inconvenience.Does anyone have any ideas how to get from Voss to Flam by bicycle?
P.S.: I’m trying to avoid the boat trip from Gudvangen to Flam because it’s much too expensive.

Thanks, Mike!
I’ll have a lock at this route. Komoot doesn’t know it…
It’s rated S3. Do you think one can use it with a packed treckingbike?

Matthew assigned that skill level(?). He’s given me assurance that anyone who bikes moderate distances on a regular basis can handle up to a 5.
But I can relate to your trepidation.
Sometimes you never know what you can do until you do it.

Thanks for all the replies.
I think I’ll stick to the (expensive) boat, because the view is so spectacular. And it’s easy…
