    Hello

I am a french cyclist whom is preparing a journey from Rovaniemi to Tromso (June-July 2026). I have a doubt about the possibility to cross the Deatnu Tana by bicyle at the level of Ruostefjelbma (about 25 km north of Tana Bru, see attached picture). This possibiliby appears on Cycle Travel but I feel that ther is a mistake.

Does somebody knowing this area can tell me (google street did not help me !)

    Many thanks. Regards,

    Francois

It’s an ice bridge that can only be crossed in winter. You have to cycle the main and only bridge further down.

Yes, coming from Rovaniemi/ Neiden/ Varangerbotn, you should cross Tana River at Tana bru. Though scenery ist much nicer east of the river. Consider taking a detour via Varangerbotn peninsula ????

BTW: There is another ice road further south near Polmak. Services like Komoot and Ride with GPS are aware of the issue of misleading ice roads but didn’t manage to solve it yet.

Thank you Michel. I “went” on the road by means of google street and i saw the road sign but i didn’t pay attention to the first word, “is” !

Thank you too for your advice to visit the Varangerbotn peninsula : that is exactely what I wish (Grense Jacobselv to Vardo by bicycle, then Hurtigruten to Berlevag and so, Tana Bru before to continue on Nordkinnhalvoya)

      Best regards

Sounds like a really fantastic adventure ????

        I did a similar trip last year (Lofoten – Tromsø – Alta – Lakselv – Tana bru – Berlevåg – Vardø – Neiden – Rovaniemi): https://ridewithgps.com/routes/53435346 (More detailed: https://www.komoot.com/de-de/tour/1598937343?share_token=a72p84J4JWA6fnfvGwxkiBXnXE8HbL7CYHw1R9KvRPVCNQ4idq&ref=wtd)

I skipped Nordkyn peninsula last year but I’ve been there in June, and i can only recommend it (see https://cyclenorway.com/en/go-further-north/)

The rough scenery on Varanger peninsula is breathtaking. You might even consider a detour from Vardø to Hamningberg.

Lessons learned from those trips: Take your time. Stop, when you see an information board; it might lead you to a great micro adventure off bike (examples: nature reserve Roddenes north of Lakselv, Silfar Canyon, Rullesteinfjæra at Tanafjord, Saviostolen near Bugøyfjord).

And enjoy riding under the midnight sun ????

    Hi Francois

I was two times in Berlevåg (2024 and 2025). I love Varanger! It is wild and beautiful, also Vardø.

You got already answers to your question, its an ice-road. I would like to give you some suggestions for Varanger.

If you plan to go with Hurtigruten or Havila from Vardø, first visit of course the Vardø island, cycle and walk out to the lighthouse, visit the Steilneset, Memorial to the Victims of the Witch Trials. Then on the way to Berlevåg you shoud stop in Båtsfjord. On my first visit to Berlevåg I saw Båtsfjord only from the boat and I thought, I am not missing anything, if I am not getting out of the boat. But I was wrong! The following year, when I crossed Varanger by bike, I stayed 3 nights there. The surroundings of Båtsfjord are nice for hiking with beautiful views. There is a really nice and good restaurant “Båtsfjord Brygge”, they have also rooms. https://www.batsfjordbrygge.com/en/home

From Båtsfjord you can take again the boat to Berlevåg. Berlevåg has a campsite and they have also rooms. Before cycling south from Berlevåg towards Tanabru, you should definitely visit Tanahorn. It lies 10km west of Berlevåg (not on the road to Tanabru) and can be reached by 9km cycling and approximately one-hour hike to the summit at 220 m altitude. It can be very cold and windy up there, but the view over the Barents Sea and the Tanafjord is breathtaking! https://www.komoot.com/de-de/tour/1813111067

On your way from Berlevåg to Tanabru you will find one of the most beautiful costal roads between Berlevåg and Kongsfjord! Look out for eagles!

Have fun and nice weather! Krisztina
