  • Conditions Around Beitostølen/Slettefjell/Valdres Late May

Has anyone been in/around/through Beitostølen/Slettefjell lately and can comment on general snowpack/snowmelt? We’re looking at heading up there for a long weekend (May 24-27) for some hiking/biking day trips. Hoping that with the lame winter across much of Norway we won’t nave to slog through (much/any) snow. But if anyone has reports that state otherwise I’ll change our plans. We’re currently looking at doing Slettefjellrunden one day and looking for another 1-day ride with similar difficulty if anyone has any recommendations.

Lastly, if there’s a site for checking cameras on roadways or anything like that to get a general idea of what conditions are like around Norway, I’d love to know where to access that. Or all the cameras that are used on the ski trails in winter.

Since making the original post, I have found more resources here that likely answer most of my questions…or that I can monitor for another couple of weeks 🙂
Namely the satellite snow depth map: https://senorge.no/?lang=no&tl=sd&dato=idag&zoom=3&center=502044:7185960

And the Beitostølen ski center live feeds: https://www.beitostolen.com/en/weather-trails/

Not holding our breath for Tusenmeteren to be open that early 😅 but I think Slettefjellrunden and Jotunheimvegen should be good. GIt gives us a day to do some Stolpejakten, haha.

In 2023, I cycled Tusenmeteren in Mid June already but Slettefjellet was still closed.

Maybe you could check with the local tourist info: https://www.valdres.com/things-to-do/slettefjellrunden-cycling-tour-p611443

Thanks for the info. I figured I would monitor things from a distance for the next 2wks then do exactly what you suggested and reach out to the local tourist office for information.

Snow in the mountains is at unprecedentedly low levels this year. Jotunheimvegen opened on the 29th May last year (3 weeks earlier than planned) and I expect the same this year. I think you will find your dates will offer many opportunities in that area (Please report back to us on your findings). Nevertheless, Tusenmeteren will not be open in late May maybe late June if lucky.

When it comes to routes, check out the Mjølkevegen Full storey page, as it offers many alternative routes in Golfjellet which might be worth considering: https://cyclenorway.com/en/routes/mjolkevegen_route/mjolkevegen/

Thank you! I had come across that short-route/day trip map a couple weeks ago and then couldn’t find it again when I tried. When I click into the routes to view on RideWithGPS I keep getting an error though. I am logged in and a paid member of RideWithGPS as well. Any thoughts how to view them?
