Hi everyone! I’m currently preparing a big trip for next Spring/Summer from Versailles (where I live) to Norway (hopefully North Cape if I can get there). My route is essentially Versailles-Copenhagen-Gothenburg-Frederikshavn-Hirstshals-Kristiansand and then following the coast as far North as I can get. I will have about 3.5 months to complete it.
However, after reading all of Matthew’s ‘full story’ information, I’m wondering about whether to get a ferry from Hirtshals directly to Stavanger or even to Bergen to save time and miss some difficult bits. I thought the first stage Kristiansand to Bergen would be the easiest but reading this website, I’ve realised that isn’t the case.
So I was wondering if anyone had any views on this? Has anyone done this route? If so did you enjoy the Kristiansand -Stavanger-Bergen bit compared to further North? Is it difficult? Would I be missing out on some amazing scenary?
By the way, I have done quite a few bike trips before but I usually cycle about 70-80km per day so not as much as some of you do!
Thanks so much!

Bonjour Jenny!
Versailles – North Cape sounds like a fantastic adventure 😊
Indeed, Kristiansand to Bergen is not that easy but worth the effort. I cycled Kristiansand – Stavanger in September, and I was surprised about the varied landscape. My little trip report with some photos might give you an impression about the scenery: https://community.cyclenorway.com/groups/trip-reports/
Stavanger – Bergen is a long detour with some ferries. You might encounter some busy roads North of Stavanger. Idea: Cycle Kristiansand – Stavanger and then decide to go to Bergen by boat or bike.
I’m aware that North Cape is the most iconic goal for most cyclists, but I recommend cycling to Slettnes fyr on Nordkyn peninsula. You will pass Norway’s southernmost lighthouse Lindesnes fyr anyway, and the linear distance to its northernmost counterpart is just about 2814 kilometers 🙃
Benefits: No tunnel, no mass tourism, a nice café, great views …
