• Hi all

I’m planning to cycle the Fjord Norway route in August and keep reading about the mosquitoes there.

As someone from Central Europe, I’ve hardly any experience with midges and mosquitoes. When are they most of a nuisance on a long cycle tour, and how can you protect yourself against them?

Do I need a mosquito net over my head, special glasses, and which repellent is best?

Is it a problem for your eyes whilst cycling, or only during short breaks, or is it mainly a problem at night whilst sleeping?

I’m cycling without a tent and plan to stay in cabins at campsites and in hotels.

Thanks for any tips and help.

      • Hi Chris,

yes, those little beasts can be an issue in summer months, depending on weather conditions and location. When it’s very windy and/ or cold, they won’t attack you all the time. They love wet areas (mires, lakes, rivers, forests …). Around mid to end of August, when temperatures are dropping, their season is more or less over.

Usually they are not much of a problem during while riding (well, maybe on hot days during a slow climb) but will attack as soon as you stop.

Bring clothes with long sleeves and a mosquito net, just in case.

        Have a great trip 🙂
