    Hi Meg,

Me and my wife are just back from our sightseeing and leisure cycling tour south of Ålesund. We were looking more or less what you described, a loop with peaceful paved roads and beautiful surroundings. So here is what we would recommend based on our limited experience.

Ferry from Sula to Festoya – cycling to Indre Standal (amazing road) – ferries Standal to Trandal to Saebo to Lekneset OR cycling from Indre Standal to Brautaset to Saebo (amazing climb and descent) – cycling from Urke to direction Stryn (beautiful first 30 km) – now you can turn 10 km before Stryn to road 613, OR, if you have time, we recommend to take detours through Stryn to lakes Oldevatnet and/or Lovatnet (amazing rides along the shores) and back – road 613 to Lote – ferry to Anda – Anda to Sandane to Hyen to Florö – from Florö along Eurovelo 1 to Ålesund.

We are happy to give more info.

Wish you a great ride (and fair weather ????)

Thanks Matthew. It was a really nice ride through the islands. Quiet and beautiful. Couple of quite steep climbs for full touring rig. Also the road from Festoya ferry to Indre Standal and climb over the hill to Volda were amazing.<div>

Happy to share experiences with anyone interested. We shall try to write a trip report sometime soon.

    Hi Slauka,

Sounds like an amazing trip! I and my wife did our first trip to northern Norway two years ago. We wrote a trip report with some first-timers’ thoughts you might or might not find useful (it is mostly different route that you will be riding though). I just translated the blog using Google translate without too much checking, so there might be some peculiarities with the language, sorry about that.

Wild animals are very timid, not to worry. You are lucky if you can spot any. With reindeer you have to be careful by car, they don’t give way, but for some reason they run away from cyclists.

We have always used water from mountain streams in the north unfiltered.

Happy to exchange further thoughts and experiences. We are planning a trip from Ålesund this June, I will post another topic for that later.
