I’m having a great time cycling up the eurovelo 1 and Matthew’s maps and advice have been invaluable.
I’m in Tromso now and trying to decide whether to do the Havoysund alternative or the traditional NorthKapp tunnel route. I’m leaning towards the Havoysund alternative but just wondered if any of you have done these routes and could offer feedback.
More specifically:
* For those who did the Havoysund alternative, did you do it in one day from Olderfjord? If not, did you use the rest areas for camping? Or do you have any other accomodations to recommend?
* For the tunnel route, anyone had experience catching a lift with a campervan through the tunnel itself? Is there a bus you can get through the tunnel (without having to get a bus the whole way from Olderfjord to Honningsvag)?

Hi Jenny,
I cycled Havøysund – Olderfjord a year ago, and I can only recommend the trip. I started in Havøysund (after disembarking Havila ferry) in the morning and arrived in Olderfjord in the afternoon. The route follows the rugged coast line most of the time but includes some climbs into the fjell. That far north, no trees give shelter, and when I was there around midsummer, it was really cold and windy. (But this applies to the Nordkapp route as well.)
I don’t recommend camping at the rest areas. They are all more or less right beside the road, and the few tourists in this area gather at these places. Some of the rest stops don’t even give proper shelter against the wind – but give reindeer the chance to photobomb your picture (see picture attached) 😁
Another alternative to approach (or leave) Magerøya (the Nordkapp island) is via Nordkyn peninsula to the east. Hurtigruten and Havila dock at Kjøllefjord and Mehamn where you can do another great detour to the northernmost lighthouse of mainland Norway (I just noticed that I already recommended this trip to you earlier 😅).
