First bikepacking trip ever – tips and tricks needed
Posted by Slavomira Macurakova on March 25, 2025 at 7:03 pmI am doing my first bikepacking trip ever – from Moskenes to North Cape from mid may to mid june. maybe too bold haha but questions I have:
Can a moose run over my tent? Shall i be afraid of a wolverine? Or bear?
Can I spend a night in a tent when its raining? i have a normal tent with i think 3000 mm water resistence. But if there is a rainy night or two ahead, how do you do it? can I keep myself dry over night? or better book a hotel?
Do you have any tips for shelters between Alta and North Cape?
Can I drink water from springs up north? or at least use it for cooking?
Hope this questions are not too dumm hehe. Sorry if yes !

Hi Slauka
Your tent should be fine, perhaps share the make and model so people can give you better feedback. We have a nature hike 3 a it has kept us dry in all weather.
When our tent is wet and the next day is sunny we always get the tent out at lunch time and dry it off ready for the next night.
If there is a few rainy days we sometimes book a hotel sometimes we continue to camp, it is a individual choice.
I do not know about the animals but @Matthew Norway has survived a few years of cycling in Norway so can not to to dangerous.
Most say water in Norway is fine to drink but I always filter the drinking water just in case there is dirty water from farming.
Hope you have a great trip. We start in may to. Martin

Moose will not bother you. As with all animals, they can be dangerous if you come between a mother and the offspring. If they are on opposite sides of the road/trail, stop and wait for them to move. Make some noise to make sure they know you are there, although they will probably notice you before you notice them.
Of course you can spend a night in a tent if it’s raining. You might encounter buildup of condensation inside your tent and on your gear. This can lead to your sleep system not performing as well as when dry. If that’s the case, consider booking a hotel room/cabin to dry off your gear. Your tent looks fine.
Have a look at this map to find shelters along your route https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1zqVpeAFh371N7jWLG8Gw9YMmAM-7vzPW&ll=62.53549572571022%2C17.97926260000002&z=3
I would bring a water filter. There are livestock and people around. I use a Katadyn befree.

Hi Slauka,
Sounds like an amazing trip! I and my wife did our first trip to northern Norway two years ago. We wrote a trip report with some first-timers’ thoughts you might or might not find useful (it is mostly different route that you will be riding though). I just translated the blog using Google translate without too much checking, so there might be some peculiarities with the language, sorry about that.
Wild animals are very timid, not to worry. You are lucky if you can spot any. With reindeer you have to be careful by car, they don’t give way, but for some reason they run away from cyclists.
We have always used water from mountain streams in the north unfiltered.
Happy to exchange further thoughts and experiences. We are planning a trip from Ålesund this June, I will post another topic for that later.
